Guardian Defense is a company located in Boca Raton, Florida that offers Active Shooter Training for schools, colleges, businesses, places of worship, and law enforcement agencies across the country. Our programs transform the way employers and staff respond to an active threat, and are designed to empower staff to act when faced with an active shooter.
History of Guardian Defense Active Shooter Training
Guardian Defense was founded in 2013 by current law enforcement officer, Steven S. Smith. Distressed by the tragic events such as the Beslan school hostage crisis in Beslan, North Ossetia-Alaina, Russia, and the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, Detective Smith created the A.C.T. (Assess, Challenge and Train) School Program to give the true “first responders” (faculty and staff) the confidence to cope with critical incidents on school grounds until professional first responders (police and fire) arrive.
This program was first implemented at a private school in Florida in 2013 and has since been implemented to thousands of staff in schools and workplaces. The ACT School Program has now evolved to become the Active Threat Response Program (ATRP) and offers a variety of practical options for every staff size and working professional. Guardian Defense also expanded to offer single officer response training to law enforcement officers and civilian response courses

Vision
POLICY-TRAIN-DRILL
At Guardian Defense, we envision all schools and workplaces to adopt our initiative of “Policy-Train-Drill.” We expect every school and business to develop a policy for active threat response that enhances security and planning for the worst-case scenario. We expect schools and businesses to train and prepare for an intruder or active killer, as one would train and prepare for fires, natural disasters, and other critical incidents. Finally, we expect schools and workplaces to implement their policies and training by conducting drills regularly.
Our Unique Approach to Active Shooter Training
Our country was stunned following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012. Plain and simple. School staff, parents and their communities scrambled, worried, hesitated, and second-guessed all plans and procedures that they had in place- or thought that they had in place. A chain reaction was set off as concerned parent inundated administrators’ voicemails and email boxes. Some schools increased security; and some schools welcomed their local law enforcement agency in to conduct active shooter scenarios for their officers. Close to zero schools remained the same.
We cannot change the past incidents of school violence and we cannot predict the future, but we can learn from them. Horrific tragedies such as Sandy Hook, Columbine and Virginia Tech have taught us how we can become better as a nation at preparing for threats and violence within our schools. Through analysis, dissection and review we learn many ways to plan and prepare our teachers and staff to combat these cowardice, yet devastating attacks.
With proper planning and routine drilling by schools and teachers, a threat, such as an active killer can be stopped and the life of YOUR child can be saved.
The reality is that school violence and mass killings at schools will not stop.
No matter how well a school believes they are hardened or strong on the outside with security, it will ultimately determine how “hard” each individual teacher is mentally and physically prepared, on the inside, to react to this type of incident.
